LANA News - The quarterly LANA Newsletter helps the membership keep in touch with what is going on in LANA and the llama community. Frequent "latest news" updates to the newsletter are sent to members and “friends of LANA” via e-mail.
LANA Website - Provides information through articles written by veterinarians, breeders, show enthusiasts, packers, fiber aficionados and researchers. Updates of local and organizational news and calendar of events.
Annual EXPO - Held every year since 1982. Our yearly gathering creates an environment for learning, showing and having fun with our llamas in a relaxed atmosphere that offers a "hands on" approach. An economical affair, with member discounts, we do everything possible to make it affordable for all with beautiful camping facilities in addition to hotels within close proximity to the activities. Adult and youth programs are offered concurrently and consist of two days of educational sessions followed by a two-day ALSA show. The educational sessions have included: camelid training and behavior, guard llamas, cart training, all aspects of packing, all aspects of fiber, birthing and cria care, general care, hay evaluation, nutritional needs, western medicine, alternative medicine (herbal, homeopathy, acupuncture), photography, marketing, and lama rescue. In addition, there are Youth across America project displays, the wool room with llama/alpaca fiber and PTLA sanctioned llama pack trials. There is an awards night that recognizes those adults and youth that have contributed significantly to the llama community. Each local/regional/national llama association is provided one free full registration packet as LANA's invitation to attend and participate in our annual EXPO. Some associations send a representative to EXPO while others use the packet as part of their fund raising efforts.
Member Recognition - LANA presents several awards each year: the Lifetime Achievement award, the Humdinger award, and two Follow-Me awards (one for adults and one for youth). The awards provide recognition to those who have contributed significantly to the Llama community.
Showing - LANA has always been a major proponent of showing. The annual double point show is held following Expo's educational program. It includes a full complement of youth classes along with carting and adult showmanship. Classes and showing workshops are included in Expo's educational programs. LANA supported the 2006 Virginia Christenson Classic and sponsored a class at a new NE youth show as well as provides LANA Youth Medallions to shows.
Packing- Exchange of information for those interested in backpacking, hiking, or camping with your llama. LANA works with the Pack Llama Trial Association (PLTA) holding a two day pack trial preceding each EXPO since 2001.
Youth Across America- LANA established an innovative youth program in 1986 to promote 4H, FFA, and Scout youth participation in lama projects locally, with application to LANA's Youth Across America Program. This program encourages competition amongst our youth for awards in Art, Essays, and Community Service, recognizes the importance of our youth, and honors their achievements with an all expense paid trip, financed by LANA, for a youth winner and a sponsor to attend LANA's annual EXPO.
Youth Program - LANA's youth program is dynamic and vibrant; ALSA judges across the country have told us that the LANA youth are some on the most impressive in the country. LANA provides an exciting 2 day youth program at Expo for both junior and senior youth including top speakers and hands on experience in all areas of interest. The excitement level is raised for one evening of CSI - a series of activities involving all the youth in competition, teamwork and challenge that fosters bonds of friendship and mutual encouragement that are integral to LANA youth.
LANA Youth Award - LANA sponsors a Youth award (a beautiful bronze medal pictured on the youth page) at shows in the US and Canada each year including the ALSA Regionals and the ALSA Grand National. If your association has a show and would like LANA's Youth award to be a part of it, please let us know and we will send you a medal and the guidelines for presenting the award.
Youth Jacket Program - LANA Provides Youth Showteam Jackets with a co-sponsoring organization to encourage excellence in the show ring for youth who qualify.
Continuing Education for Veterinarians - LANA allows any veterinarian, who is a member of LANA, to attend, at no cost, the two-days of educational sessions at LANA EXPO. LANA 's Hand to Hand program provides published Veterinary resources. See Hand to Hand program
Library - Books, videos, and related items for borrowing and browsing.
Stand Alone Educational Clinics- LANA, in conjunction with other llama organizations (such as CAL-ILA), has organized, sponsored, and/or held various one day educational clinics for its members covering such areas as Advanced Neonatal Care, showing and Marketing.
Fiber LANA has promoted fiber use with a wide variety of classes and workshops from grooming and shearing to all aspects of processing, dying, spinning and weaving to knitting as well as felting for everything from wall art to shelters, packs, jewelry and clothing. There is also a display of fiber, spinning and made-from-fiber items at the EXPO. A fiber coop has been formed by LANA, the Feather River Fiber Coop, for all of those interested members.
LMRG - LANA has been a participating member of the Lama Medical Research Group since its inception and formation at Lama Assembly in the early 90's.
Camelid Research Fund - Established by contributions from LANA's membership, and turned over to the Morris Animal Foundation (MAF), where the annual interest earned by the fund is used to support vital research. This fund has grown during the ten years since its inception to over $148,000. In addition, our annual EXPO fund-raising adds to the funds available. Several years ago LANA reached the "Sapphire" level that the MAF established for those organizations that had contributed between $100,000 and $250,000 to research.
Government Relations - Beginning in 1999, as encouraged by its membership and those from several other outside associations, LANA committed to funding a LANA representative (a vet by trade) as an additional llama community member to be consistently involved in government relation issues, to input lama concerns and to bring back information from all USAHA meetings. This LANA government relations' representative works on a continual basis, in conjunction with representatives from other lama associations, for the benefit of the entire Camelid community. LANA keeps the llama community appraised of situations by publishing the information in the LANA NEWS and sharing it via the Newsletter exchange program.
Llama Lifeline - A safety net for llamas. A network of individuals, businesses, and organizations that will take action to intervene on behalf of llamas in precarious life situations through consultation, networking, education, and/or placement of lamas in new homes within the lama community. Llama Lifeline is a model that other llama associations may emulate. see lifeline page
Next of Kin/Live Animal Alert Card - A plastic laminated card that may be carried in your billfold or purse to identify you as having animals that would need food/water should you be suddenly incapacitated.
Membership Directory - Provides a listing of referral services in addition to member information.
Joint Project Ventures with Other Organizations - LANA is actively seeking opportunities to join forces for projects with other organizations to provide better services to the communities they both serve. To date LANA and CAL-ILA have worked together on multiple projects involving youth, education, Lifeline, and Sanctuary and have other exciting joint ventures in the planning stages.
